A Free Field represents the placement of a Metadata Item at some coordinates within a Fitted Frame.

In some cases the same Metadata Item, Title, let’s say, might be presented in more than one location on a Sheet for easy reference.

So, for any given inclusion of a Metadata Item within a Fitted Frame there will be one or possibly multiple Free Fields where that same Metadata Item will be displayed with a possibly different text style.

There may be metadata defined in model files which is not currently displayed in any Frame.

A Frame may be defined that does not display any Metadata Items, but this is unlikely to be useful other than for diagnostic purposes.
