Behave 7 Release - v7.1.3

Released on 2026-02-06

Installation Instructions

Behave7 is a self-contained Java-based file (JAR file) that does not need to be “installed” in the typical sense. Scroll to the bottom where there are four files.

Windows Installation

We recommend saving the program to a consistent location, such as a local workspace (e.g., C:/Workspace) so that it is easy to find. Windows users have two options:

  • Save the zip file (e.g., behave7-7.1.1-windows-amd64.zip) to your computer, extract the files, and the program is ready for use. The zip file bundles everything together, so users do not need to have Java or Amazon Corretto installed on their computer.
  • If you have Java or Amazon Corretto on your computer, you can choose to download the JAR file and not the zip.

Since Behave7 is not installed and therefore not recognized by Windows as “software”, it cannot be added to the Start Menu. In general, it cannot be added to the Task Bar, although some users, using personal computers, have been able to do so.

MacOS and Linux Installation

Save the JAR file to your computer. You must have Java, Amazon Corretto or another package on your computer to open the JAR file.

Uninstall Behave7

Simply delete the folder that contains Behave7 to remove it from your computer.

    • Slope in the worksheet inputs can be selected as either percent or degrees
    • Precision for Direction of Heading when not aligned is fixed, so now it is a whole number
    • "File Name:" in the Results page is populated when importing files
    • Notes from Standard worksheets will appear in every sub-module of the Guided worksheets, instead of just in the Results
  • Surface & Contain
    • Rate of Spread and Flame Length are pre-selected
    • Ranges with spaces or auto-complete when selecting Calculate Minimum Production Rate are not allowed
  • Surface & Mortality
    • Scorch Height equation has been fixed to produce accurate results
    • Quercus montana has been added to the Mortality Tree Species list
  • Spotting sub-module
    • Running Spotting with Probability of Ignition always produces complete results
    • Max Spot Distance appends only to Heading on the Results table when ran with Heading, Flanking, Backing
    • Spotting outputs can be ran without any other outputs selected, with accurate results
    • emberDiam value has been updated to 0.5
    • In the worksheet Outputs, Wind-Driven Surface Fire now also says "Grass Only" to make it more clear which Fuel Models apply to this Output
    • The order in which the Spotting Inputs appear has been updated and standardized across the different sub-modules
  • Calculators
    • Horizontal Distance in Slope from Map Measurements calculator gives accurate results
    • Slope in the Slope from Map Measurements calculator now appears in both percent and degrees

Feature Updates

  • Two new calculators:

    • Relative Humidity
    • Safe Separation Distance & Safety Zone Size
  • Surface & Contain Module Updates:

    • Titles in the Containment Diagram now describe the row for the given result, making them more meaningful.
    • The Fireline Constructed graph in the Containment Diagram no longer appears when fires are not contained
    • Fireline Production Rate no longer appears in the Results
    • Calculate Minimum Production Rate Only does not allow for any ranged inputs. This Output allows users to run Contain without adding Resources.
  • Under Settings, there is a global button to switch to all units to English or Metric.

    • Caution: when importing worksheets that do not follow your default units, there may be issues with changing output units. This is a known bug and is planned to be fix in an upcoming release.
  • In Surface & Crown Outputs, Torching Trees now appears before Active Crown Fire

Bug Fixes

  • Result Tables for Multi-Valued Inputs are fixed and updated to allow for readable tables with two and three ranged inputs. Tables are now split by each output.
  • Map Units now only display for the appropriate Output variables. In the Output Table on the Results page, these are now listed as “Map Units - Output Name” (e.g., Map Units - Max Spot Distance from Torching Trees)
  • Containment Diagram: typos fixed in the legend, Tactic and Contain Status labels in the table now show descriptions instead of numeric values, and precision is fixed
  • Flame Length is no longer an input when running Torching Trees alone
  • Run Description has been moved to the Results page, and will now stay with the worksheets, and appear in the PDFs. It is still Optional
  • Unit preferences are now maintained when importing worksheets – units specified in the worksheet take precedence over the default preferences.
  • “Reset to Defaults” in Settings will function and not cause the program to crash. Note that worksheets are also reset when this button is clicked.
  • Under Graph Settings, the Z and Z2 variable selection has been updated to say Y and Y2.
  • Inconsistencies in the language on the beginning pages have been updated
  • The empty, phantom table on the Results page that sometimes appeared has been removed
