Hacktoberfirst Guide
OSEA Community is glad to announce that they will be participating in the upcoming Hacktoberfest in October 2025!
Why Hacktoberfirst
Hacktoberfest is a global celebration of Open Source that takes place throughout October. It focuses on contributing to projects such as those supported by OSEA, a worldwide community of technologists and innovators dedicated to leveraging Open Source solutions to tackle real-world energy access challenges. Whether you're looking to enhance your skills, give back to the community, or explore innovations in Open Source energy access, Hacktoberfest is the perfect opportunity to start.
Getting Started
To get started, it's important to adhere to the expected behaviour in the community, as outlined in the Code of Conduct.
Do you have a GitHub account? Have you installed Git? You must first configure your account to contribute to OSEA. If you have never completed this process, start by signing up for a GitHub account
Once your account is set up, you can start by reading through and adhering to the Contributor Guide. Before starting the implementation, it's a good practice to read the README. These documents often outline best practices that can help new contributors get started and serve as a guide when contributing to any of the Open Source projects under the OSEA umbrella.
Great! If you're looking to contribute to the OSEA community and want to tackle a simple issue, you can use the GitHub UI for quick changes. However, if you're ready to dive deeper and really contribute, follow these steps: fork the repository, clone it locally, and start contributing like a pro!
Finding the right issue
After reading and understanding the contribution guide. Here's a list of all the issues you can work on.
If you find an issue that interests you, please leave a comment to let others know you're working on it. This is also an excellent opportunity to ask questions and seek assistance from other contributors and maintainers. The OSEA community uses Discord for discussions and support. Don't hesitate to join us on Discord to connect with the community and ask any questions you may have!
First Pull Request
To successfully contribute to an OSEA repository, your pull request should be meaningful and impactful. The following examples from the official Hacktoberfest site are considered low-quality contributions and should be avoided:
PRs that are automated (for example, scripted opening PRs to remove whitespace, fix typos, or optimise images).
PRs that are disruptive (for example, taking someone else's branch or committing and making a PR).
PRs that a project maintainer regards as a hindrance instead of a help.
A submission that's an attempt just to increase your PR count for October.
Remember, one PR to fix a typo is fine, but five PRs to remove stray whitespace are not.
For more information, see Hacktoberfest: Quality Standards.
Start your Open Source contribution with OSEA this October!
At OSEA, we welcome all Open Source contributors. We value every contribution, from implementing new features to fixing typos in our documentation. Whether it's for Hacktoberfest or any other time of the year, you're welcome to explore the project and find something that interests you.
