Is the forked previewgenerator needed?

I wonder what the need for the custom forked previewgenerator is. The 99.99.99 version solution feels like a hack anyways, and by now the fork is highly outdated.

Maybe the reason for forking it is obsolete by newer features added to the original previewgenerator, like specifing worker count?

Getting rid of the custom solution, if possible, would be nice, I think.
