Roku built in fonts apparently only support Latin based alphabets. In theory, Roku channels can include custom fonts. But apparently the size of the custom font is limited to 40 or so KB. A universal font, at least the open source TTF ones I've found, are far larger than this.

Possible option: Create a subset of a universal font that includes the languages seen fairly often in PeerTube videos (Russian, Chinese, Japanese) but excludes all others.

Apparently a channel can be up to 20MB in size and still be targeted to a Roku 2 series device and can be up to 50MB for newer models.

Several problems remain:

• Finding a font that covers the whole unicode code space. There does not seem to be a open source one that does this.
• Roku only supports custom font selections for some types of display “objects”. A row list title, for example does not support this so titles based on tags written non-latin alphabets display incorrectly.
• So any font selected should not look out of place against elements (button text, etc.) that must use Roku’s built in fonts.
