get rid of pycodestyle?

It would be nice to get rid of setup.cfg, which only has a bit of configuration in it for pycodestyle as of now.

Reading that issue there doesn't give much hope that they will ever support pyproject.toml as everybody else does meanwhile. PyCQA/pycodestyle#813

So the simplest solution might be to replace it with another tool.

One approach might be to adopt black for automatic styling and not having to manually deal with code formatting anymore. It can not only check pep8 formatting, but also fix it.

I'd go with what I do professionally right now: uv and all the bundled tools like black-compatible ruff for formatting and linting.
