Keys in the mines of moria?

I found the gate key and the elevater key, but I didn't find the key to the oak box before I encountered it. I took the box in case the key turned up, but I missed a key earlier in another adventure. Should I have found this key before the box? Thanks,

I guess this issue could be rewritten as "the mines of moria scenario should have some hints". The key to open the oak box and proceed through the mithril gate is a tricky one to get.
