5.0.0 released (12.15.2025)

this library hasn't seen a release for 2 years and a lot has changed in the node ecosystem.

release 5.0.0 is meant to address some of these changes and adopt more modern tooling (ex: vitest) and other best practices.

while there are no API changes, i wanted to change the MAJOR version to acknowledge that a lot has changed under the hood.
