Running Xwayland rootful with -hidpi returns xdg_surface error 3

Running Xwayland in rootful mode with the -hidpi option fails and outputs the following error:

XWAYLAND: xdg_surface#15: error 3: must ack the initial configure before attaching buffer

Reproducible on both cosmic-comp 1.0.8 and niri 25.11 and requires the scale factor to be above one (1.25 in my case).

Sadly wasn't able to test this with Anvil, as I couldn't figure out how to change the scale factor.

Apparently the latest commit of Xwayland works in rootful mode with the -hidpi option. It's only version 24.1.9 that has this issue, so I don't know what to do with this thread.

The error message you provided represents a protocol error, which is fatal in wayland. Protocol errors are posted by the compositor in response to protocol violations. Some compositors are more strict than others. So it can either be a buggy client or the compositor handles something wrong. You can generate a wayland debug log and upload it here which might give us a hint what happens. The debug log can be enabled by setting the WAYLAND_DEBUG environment variable to 1.
