Can't get FileManager to load complex file paths/directories

I am having some problems with using FileManager with relatively large and complex paths. It works fine for smaller directories but I'm unable to load one that I was testing with approximately 1200 files and 40 directories/subdirectories. The corresponding front-end FileManager component never loads the data.

I am using the server as middleware.

Is this a known limitation or is there some config value/other changes I can make to get past this?
