How to reduce video size when full screen is set as the default?

I discovered the option to automatically play a video using the full screen. It's a useful option. But sometimes I want to reduce the size of the video to what I believe is termed the "miniplayer" (the default view). I thought swiping down on the video would accomplish this, but it rarely works.

Is this a bug, or is there a better way to accomplish this task?
